Mercurial Stories is a weekly flash fiction literary journal that follows a very strict regimen. If you respect the rules, then most likely you will see your story included in the weekly issue.
-Prompts are posted on Monday by 6 am EST.
-Stories are due on Thursday by 8 pm EST.
-The weekly issue is published within the week of receipt.
-Stories must be 500 words or less.
(Each prompt has a specific word count and deadline. These guidelines are for the most frequent prompts. Please refer to each specific prompt when writing.)
-Stories must (in your own creative way) address the prompt.
-Stories must be readable. Excessive grammatical errors that affect readability will be rejected as I do not have enough time between your submission and the Saturday publication to edit everyone’s piece.
–Please submit as a PDF file or copy and paste the story into the submission field. If you cannot use either method, please contact me to arrange another method. Thank you.
–At the bottom of your story, please include a short bio with your submission along with any promotional points you want me to include (social media links, etc.).
Also, if you don’t want your story to be included in the weekly podcast, please indicate this after your bio.
–Submissions are now being accepted via Green Submissions. (You can get there via the “Submit” button in the menu on the top. It will take you to a new page. It is a secure site and at this point the most affordable (ahem, free) submissions platform for this publication.) We do accept simultaneous submissions. And yet, due to the nature of this endeavor, we do not accept publications that have been published elsewhere. Writers do retain full copyright of their work.
A selection of stories from the weekly issues will be included in the quarterly print edition. Please know that by submitting your story for the weekly issue, you agree to the possibility of inclusion in the printed collection.
Mercurial Stories is a no-fee, no-pay publication. If this changes in the future, it will be for the benefit of contributors, not the publisher.
